Ryo Fukui
Scenery
What's particularly intriguing about "Scenery" is that it was Fukui's debut album. He started learning the piano relatively late in his life, around the age of 22, which makes his proficiency and the sophistication displayed on the album even more impressive. His entry into the world of jazz was heavily inspired by luminaries such as Bill Evans and McCoy Tyner, and you can definitely hear these influences in his nuanced and expressive playing style.
The album was recorded in a single day at the Yamaha Hall in Sapporo, Fukui’s hometown, capturing a spontaneous and lively essence. The trio setup, featuring Fukui on piano, Yoshinori Fukui on drums, and Satoshi Denpo on bass, allows for a vibrant interaction between musicians, each track illustrating the trio's synergy and energy.
"Scenery" has since achieved a cult following, particularly after the resurgence of interest through platforms like YouTube and music forums. Its tracks like "It Could Happen to You" and "Early Summer" are now celebrated for their melodic beauty and rhythmic complexity.
An interesting tidbit about Fukui is that despite his growing reputation, he remained relatively modest and committed to his craft, often performing in small venues in Japan. This dedication to authentic musical expression over fame is what endears him to listeners, continuing to inspire long after his passing in 2016. "Scenery" thus not only serves as an introduction to Fukui’s artistry but also as a timeless contribution to the jazz world, resonating with its emotional depth and technical brilliance.
