The Beatles
The Collection
The Beatles: The Collection is a 1982 Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab (MFSL) vinyl box set that presents the entire Beatles studio catalog, remastered at half speed from the original stereo master tapes. Released on October 1, 1982 as a 14-LP collection, it was issued as a limited-edition package with a booklet and an authenticity certificate.
Recording History
The original recordings span 1962–1970 and were made at EMI, Trident, Olympic, De Lane Lea, Regent Sound and Apple studios in London, plus Pathé Marconi Studio in Paris. The box set’s hallmark is half-speed mastering by MFSL from the original stereo masters; the producers credited are George Martin and Phil Spector. Each LP was pressed on black vinyl by the Victor Company of Japan, and the packaging swapped in a booklet of tape-box-style imagery with an authenticity certificate. Missing from the collection were the Beatles’ singles, EPs and certain non-album tracks.
Chart Performance & Recognition
Released in 1982, The Collection was lauded for its sonic fidelity and reportedly sold out within the first year, with MFSL issuing a second run to reach about 25,000 copies over the ensuing years. Concrete chart positions or certifications are not widely documented due to its limited-edition nature.
Cultural Impact & Legacy
The box is regarded as a milestone in audiophile Beatles releases, emblematic of MFSL’s half-speed mastering approach and high-fidelity pressings, and it helped fuel later interest in comprehensive Beatles box sets. Its selective track inclusion and distinctive packaging have made it a sought-after collector’s item.
